MADISON CRAFTSMAN CHOSEN TO BUILD CHAIRS FOR HISTORIC COURTHOUSE

Jeff Trapp has been selected to make Windsor chairs for the Chowan County Courthouse in Edenton North Carolina. The Chowan County Courthouse was built in 1767 and is currently undergoing restoration. The courthouse is a National Historic Landmark and served as a Whig center during the Revolutionary War. It is the nation's best preserved colonial courthouse and considered the finest Georgian Courthouse in the South.

Jeff Trapp Windsors is a one man shop specializing in Windsor chairs and period furniture in Madison Wisconsin. Trapp's chairs caught the eye of the of the courthouse renovation committee because of their authentic Colonial style and his devotion to traditional techniques. Trapp harvests his own trees to assure the finest materials and then utilizes traditional methods and tools to make windsors that are typical of the finest colonial craftsmanship. His old world methods include features like undercarriages in compression, riven wood and tapered socket joints. Traditional tools include adzes, drawkknifes, scorps, spokeshaves and travishers.

The Chowan Courthouse is scheduled for a reopening and dedication on Oct. 8, 2004. One event scheduled is a special working session of the North Carolina Supreme Court.
