5-Day Sackback Chairmaking Class |
 |
Jeff Trapp Windsors offers a 5-day sackback chairmaking class, using
traditional tools and methods.
The student is offered detailed one-on-one personalized instruction
and takes home the chair they handcraft.
|
|
The chairmaking process is broken down into easy steps and includes instruction
in using traditional hand tools such as the adze, spokeshave, draw knife
and hand plane. Jeff teaches the techniques used to create true hand
made chairs:
-
riving wood
-
whittling spindles
-
steaming oak
-
creating wedged and tapered joints
-
many other traditional woodworking methods.
All tools will be supplied for the duration of the course.

Jeff provides the handcrafted turnings for your chair, as well as a basic
discussion of turning. You will paint or stain your chair as you like
when you return home and Jeff offers some painting technique tips.
There is enough to learn in a typical chair class, that trying to learn turning
also can be too much in a five day period. Learning spindle turning basics
is easy then it's practice and more practice. I am now offering a 6 1/2 day
class with turning instruction for $850. Call or email me and we can talk
about what option is best.
The cost of the class is $650.00. Class times are arranged by mutual agreement
and usually run Mon. through Fri. Madison has many motels and restaurants
and Jeff is happy to offer suggestions.

"Jeff is able to demonstrate or explain technique
better then any book ever. His knowledge of woodworking goes far beyond chairs,
and his sense for style is untouched by others IMHO."

"I felt the class was a great experience. I have read
a couple of books on making Windsor chairs, but nothing compares with building
one from start to finish. Being able to work with you 1-on-1 was invaluable
for picking up the little tips & tricks that can really make a difference.
I feel like I could tackle one by myself!" D.

"We got home all right. To tell you the truth I had
some fear that I would be bringing home something that I might not be proud
of. That I might have to put in a corner of the basement, never to be spoken
of again. At some time or other I would be forced to display it to our
children.
Jeff, I was proud when our daughter Jane and her family
came over Saturday night and I could show them my (our) work. At that point
she talked about it being a heirloom. Thanks again for making me proud. I
may not have been your best, or even a very good student, but you made me
and my family very happy." DN, IL
